Gecomponeerd rond 1960 op teksten van de Afro-Amerikaanse dichters Langston Hughes en Waring Cuny, waarschijnlijk voor de Kerkraadse tenor Jean van Ree (artiestennaam van Haynz Schlösser), die ze in ieder geval – met Niël aan de piano – uitvoerde in 1963 tijdens het door Gaudeamus en het Utrechts Conservatorium georganiseerde concours voor vertolkers van muziek van onze tijd. In 1965 opgegeven aan de BUMA als opus 5. Op 15 juni 1968 (zie onder 2) volgt de uitvoering door de sopraan Mia Besselink, docente zang aan het Conservatorium Maastricht (Niël piano) in de stadschouwburg. Dit is een opname door de ROZ van de uitvoering op 27 mei 1970 bij gelegenheid van de culturele manifestatie Impuls. De revisie van Niël heeft als datum 30–6–1972, met vermelding dedicated to Jean van Ree.
